About Background Audio Remover
Background Audio Remover is a small, independent web tool that removes background noise from videos and audio files. It removes noise, not music: wind, hum, fans and traffic go, the voice stays. It is free, it needs no account, and your files are processed on your own device — they are not uploaded.
We built it because the noise removers we tried either uploaded private videos to a server, returned only an audio file when you gave them a video, or asked you to sign in and pay before you could download. Here you drop a file, hear Original and Clean side by side, and download the same video with clean sound.
How it works
Your browser reads the file with Mediabunny, turns the sound into 48 kHz audio and runs it through DeepFilterNet3, an open-source speech enhancement model, compiled to WebAssembly. Long files are processed in pieces on several CPU cores at once, with the pieces blended together. The clean sound is encoded at the same bitrate as your original sound and put back into the same container; the video stream is copied without being decoded.
Open-source licenses
Background Audio Remover is built on these open-source projects. Their license texts are published here unchanged:
| Component | Used for | License |
|---|---|---|
| DeepFilterNet3 | The noise-removal model (WebAssembly build: @lofcz/deepfilternet-web 0.1.0) | MIT, Apache-2.0 |
| Mediabunny | Reading and writing MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC files | MPL-2.0 |
| @mediabunny/aac-encoder | AAC encoding where the browser has none (contains FFmpeg’s AAC encoder) | MPL-2.0, FFmpeg: LGPL-2.1, FFmpeg notice |
| @mediabunny/mp3-encoder | MP3 encoding where the browser has none (contains LAME) | MPL-2.0, LAME: LGPL |
| @mediabunny/flac-encoder | FLAC encoding (contains libFLAC) | MPL-2.0, libFLAC: BSD (Xiph) |
| Geist and Geist Mono | Fonts | SIL OFL 1.1 |
The DeepFilterNet3 model file is the unmodified WebAssembly build of @lofcz/deepfilternet-web 0.1.0, split into two parts for hosting. Mediabunny and its encoder packages are used unmodified.
Sample clip and demos
The 26-second sample and the “Hear the difference” demos use public-domain LibriVox recordings (“The Art of War”, read by Moira Fogarty, and “Bartleby, the Scrivener”, read by Bob Neufeld) mixed with noise we generated ourselves (wind, fan, 60 Hz hum, traffic, a car horn). The Clean side of each demo is the output of this tool with no other editing; both sides are cut and saved as MP3 the same way.
Who runs it
