Where hum and buzz come from

Hum is the low tone of mains electricity — 50 Hz in most of the world, 60 Hz in North America — leaking into a recording, often with buzzy overtones above it. Typical causes are a cable running next to a power cord, a ground loop between two devices, cheap lighting dimmers or a laptop on its charger.

A classic “hum filter” cuts fixed frequencies. This tool works differently: a speech model keeps the voice and removes the hum, its overtones and other background noise at the same time, so you don’t have to know the exact frequency.

What it can’t do

  • It is built for speech. On recordings with no voice — a music track with hum, for example — it will remove the music too.
  • It removes noise, not echo. A voice recorded in a big, echoey room keeps its echo.

Tips

  • Works with WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC and OGG audio, and with MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV video. You get back the same format.
  • Hum usually sits under the whole recording. Play a pause in Original, then press S to hear it gone in Clean.
  • If you can re-record: plug the recorder into a different outlet, or unplug the laptop charger.

Questions

Can it remove 60 Hz hum from a video?

Yes. Drop the video; the picture is copied as it is and the sound is cleaned. 50 Hz and 60 Hz hum and their overtones are removed along with other background noise.

Will it remove hum from music?

No. The model keeps voices and removes everything else, so on a music recording it would remove the music as well.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The noise removal runs inside your browser on your own device. The file is never sent to a server.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no length limit — only what your device can handle. The tool runs on your own computer or phone, so it costs us almost nothing to offer.
